Connection to Hypothyroidism
Connection to Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism and the metabolic process of cellular respiration go hand in hand to regulate our metabolism and energy use. As mentioned before, hypothyroidism is a health condition that causes the underactivity of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland’s main role is to regulate our metabolism – the process of breaking down food molecules to convert to energy. Metabolism is regulated through the production of the thyroid hormones – T3 and T4. In the case of hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones, especially T4, to stimulate the process of metabolism. Our body uses the food we eat to produce energy. If the thyroid hormones are unable to break down food efficiently than our bodies are unable to produce energy efficiently. This also affects the metabolic processes of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Thyroid hormones usually increases the rate of energy released from carbohydrates and proteins as well as stimulate the breakdown of fats. If thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and protein does not occur efficiently causing the cellular respiration process to affecting the production of ATP.
